The Way of a Thousand Arrows

The Camino de Santiago is a path that has been followed by pilgrims since time immemorial, and The Way of a Thousand Arrows tells the story of one family’s journey along this path. An Australian family from the suburbs of Sydney decide to walk the Camino de Santiago (The Way of St James), an ancient pilgrim path which runs across the north of Spain’s rich and varied provinces.

Beginning in Pamplona, famous for its bull run, they trace the steps of the pilgrims through the centuries, eventually coming to stand beneath the towers of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where the body of the apostle James is interred, then on to Finisterre (the end of the earth).

Walking 450 kilometres in only 22 days, with no plan and just a path to follow, reveals more than just a history lesson, and forces the family to face not only the rigours of the journey but their own courage, discipline and determination.

This book is about those lessons, the lessons of the path as seen through the eyes of a modern family, a normal, everyday Australian family from Sydney, all members of the human race, the same race that walked the path centuries earlier.

The Way of a Thousand Arrows is a journey of discovery, a coming home.

The Pilot Station: Upcoming Title

The-Pilot-StationAward winning Australian Writer Jonathan Drane depicts the haunting history of a Pilot Station on the north coast of New South Wales, where he has spent many years holidaying but was unable to remain oblivious to the powerful presence and tragic history of the station. The station which is a remnant of the light house history of Australian maritime navigation stands on a headland facing the Pacific Ocean. It holds a position on the coastline which has seen tragic death and accidental ship wrecks over the centuries. It also holds a secret, the mysterious death of  Frances Williams the wife of the first pilot-boatman who was buried in a shallow sand grave on the grounds of the Pilot Station at the age of 27 leaving three children behind to Isaac her husband.

In Jonathan's first historical book called 'The First Pilot' and prompted by a poem that came into his head while at the station with his own children, he weaves a haunting picture of the station, the first pilots and the presence they hold for those who visit.
